Religious Films

Religion is a common topic of lesbian films, as there is a rich history of oppression and repression, as well as unique same-sex spaces from segregated religious traditions. These films range from comedies (mostly the Jewish neurotic kind of comedy with Shiva Baby and Kissing Jessica Stein) to intense dramas. The settings of nunneries and Orthodox Jewish sites also are important places for these films, as these spaces offer the opportunities for women to spend time together without the interference of men. These spaces are rife with the potential for lesbianism, and films like Benedetta and Disobedience deliver on the idea of forbidden romance alongside love. Ultimately, religious lesbian films offer a wide variety of ways to demonstrate internalized and externalized homophobia, as well as depict the reality of religious thought on queer peoples’ bodies and actions.
